Guidelines: Best Practice in Research Labs/Groups

Work in research labs and groups follows the same guiding principles as the rest of the project in terms of creating a safe, respectful, and supportive working environment for all members. In addition, there are important additional components that are considered in the laboratories involved in the GeoSafe project.

Safety: All labs involved in the project are regulated by the individual institutions in which they sit. All the institutions adhere to stringent safety policy, appropriate to the type of work that is conducted within the labs. This involves safety inductions for all staff, training, and review at regular intervals.

Sustainability: All labs within the GeoSafe project are committed to reducing their environmental impact far as is possible. Many of our laboratories adhere to the LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) accreditation. Laboratory-based research is essential for advancing society, but it is also extremely energy and resource intensive. It is estimated that laboratories are responsible for around 2% of global plastic waste, and use 3-10 times more energy per square meter than does a typical office. GeoSafe will endeavour to ensure that all the laboratories within the project have at least Bronze accreditation within the LEAF scheme.
