What is GeoDraw?
The GeoSafe project was funded through the GeoDraw funding programme, which is jointly funded by NERC and Nuclear Waste Services. The initial call for projects, which was announced in late 2022, can be found here.
The GeoDraw programme aims to gain insights into key knowledge gaps related to the geology, hydrogeology, and factors influencing subsurface characteristics of lower strength sedimentary rock (LSSR), to understand and forecast the safe disposal of radioactive waste without adverse effects on the environment or human well-being. The programme also seeks to offer foundational evidence applicable to sub-surface energy endeavours, such as Carbon Capture and Storage, as well as other energy applications dependent on engineering within Low Strength Sedimentary Rocks, and facilitate the acquisition of specialised skills and technical expertise to contribute to the ongoing geological disposal initiative in the United Kingdom.
