EDI Workplan: Training and Development Opportunities

EDI Workplan: Training and Development Opportunities
GeoSafe aims to promote the training, development, and continuous learning of all its researchers. All GeoSafe researchers are required to complete key EDI training courses that are provided by the participating institutions, including training in Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity, LGBT+ awareness training, mental health first aid training, and unconscious bias training. This should be done within six months of joining the project, and completion should be confirmed with the GeoSafe EDI Committee.

All new starters at University of Manchester (UoM) complete an online module on diversity in the workplace as part of their induction process. This online module intends to support colleagues to become familiar with equality legislation and looks in detail at all equality groups. All staff involved in the recruitment process complete an online module on unconscious bias. This online module focuses on definitions, examples, and different scenarios all around the theme of unconscious bias.

In addition, UoM has a range of other EDI focused courses, including Supporting Trans staff. Details can be found on the EDI page of StaffNet.

There are also opportunities across GeoSafe for training in Grant Writing, Fellowship Applications, and Mock Interviews, as well as voluntary courses such as Mental Health, Productivity, Boundary Setting, and Assertive Communications. To access the training opportunities available in your, institution please contact your EDI committee representative.

During the GeoSafe project, Liverpool University will lead an inter-institutional EDI course, and Imperial College will organise training sessions to GeoSafe members on

A course will be delivered by the Dept of Earth Science and Engineering, Imperial College, on the creation of Equality Impact Assessments. The Management Committee will generate the following Equality Impact Assessments (EIA), to be created in Year 1 and updated during the project, and these will be reviewed and must be approved by the EDI Committee. The following EIAs should be produced:

  • Produce EIAs for GeoSafe events: Annual Meeting and Early Career Conference.
  • Produce EIA for Supervision and Responsible Research for all researchers.
  • Produce EIA for recruitment practices.
