Shadow Work Package Leads will be assigned during the project to allow Early Career Researchers (ECR) to participate in selected Management Committee and other project meetings. Care will be taken to ensure that ECRs are not overloaded with administrative tasks.
Involvement of ECRs in Supervision: ECRs are actively encouraged to become involved in co-supervising GeoSafe-related MSc and PhD projects. We will encourage all researchers to advertise cross-institution co-supervision opportunities within the project (i.e., post-docs supervising PhD and/or MSc projects, and PhD students supervising MSc projects). This will provide ECRs with opportunities of mentoring and supervision, fostering their leadership and communication skills. Senior academics should be aware of these supervisory roles played by ECRs, and bear them in mind when nominating ECRs for relevant internal awards and prizes.
GeoSafe-NWS Secondment Schemes will be organised for PhD and PDRA researchers to visit NWS, and potentially other participating industrial partners, to focus on transferring research findings into the GDF programme. Secondment schemes for PhD or early career researchers involve short-term placements in industry settings, typically lasting a week or longer. These help ECRs to develop their skills, foster industry-academia collaborations, and support career development. Secondments facilitate the exchange of knowledge between academia and industry. Researchers gain insights into practical applications of their work, while subject matter experts benefit from exposure to direct and constant interaction with GeoSafe researchers. During secondment in NWS, researchers will gain deeper knowledge about the GDF programme, and how to best align their research with the current challenges. A GeoSafe-NWS secondment offers opportunities to establish professional connections between GeoSafe researchers and NWS subject matter experts. This type of networking can lead to future collaborations, partnerships, as well as to broaden horizons about future careers and job opportunities. Overall, secondment schemes are an important ingredient in the strategy to enhancing collaboration between GeoSafe and NWS, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that research has practical applications that benefit society and the economy.
